The first two years of the travel grant have been a success! We were very happy to welcome so many new researchers to the library.

We are happy to announce that applications for the 2024 Student Travel Grant Programme are now open!

Our goal is to make our library more accessible to a wider range of students. Opportunities to travel for research and network are invaluable for students and we want to make these experiences more accessible to more researchers.

About the award

To best disperse the funds to those who are most in need of financial support for travel, we are dividing the maximum reimbursement amounts based on where you are travelling from:

  • Group 1: Within The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany: max. €100
  • Group 2: Elsewhere in Europe (outside of Group 1): max. €300
  • Group 3: Outside of Europe: max. €700

The minimum length of stay is 3 days. This award can be used any time before 30 November, 2024.
The purpose of this award is to assist with travel/accommodation costs for a short library visit. This is not a fully funded research stay. For greater financial assistance, please see our Academic departments' Short-term grant. (Please note: applicants are welcome to apply for both awards, but cannot be awarded both in the same year. If an applicant applies for both awards, the Short-term application will take priority over the library award).

When filling out your application, please indicate the amount of money you are requesting (within your group’s maximum). Please be transparent in your request. We want to provide support to as many applications as possible with priority given to applicants who have a higher cost of travel to Amsterdam. We will also request a proposed budget in the application.

Who can apply?

Students at any level who are researching topics related to International Tax Law or the history of taxation (relevant to our collections). The applications are open internationally and students of any level or year of study are welcome to apply. You must be writing on or researching for a paper or project relevant to our collection. We want a confirmation of the student status, e.g. copy of the student card.

Important Dates

  • Deadline: 3 June 2024
  • Decision date: 28 June 2024

How to apply?

Please fill out the online application. The application consists of:
  • Your information and programme details
  • Requested amount (based on your Group)
  • Proposed budget (this does not need to be exact, just a rough estimate to explain why you are requesting the amount)
  • Research Summary
    • Summarize your research topic 1-2 paragraphs, you can expand on this in the application letter if needed
  • Application letter (max 1,000 words)
    • Please introduce yourself and outline your research topic and what resources you want to access at our library
  • Your CV

How does it work?

We will contact everyone around the decision date noted on this page ( we will try to get to you before that date, but this will depend on the volume of applications). We want to offer aid to as many students as possible, so we might have to send an offer less than what you requested. Priority is given to applications with higher costs of travel.

If selected, you will receive an email with the offered amount and a form to sign. This form will need to be accepted within 3 weeks. Please keep an eye on your spam mailbox if you do not see anything in your main inbox. If we do not get a confirmation after the deadline set in the letter, then we will move forward with applicants on the waitlist.

After you have arrived in the library, you will be sent a reimbursement form to fill. We send this to our Finance team to process and transfer the award. We will need your bank details (with IBAN).

Please note: some countries might require a bank statement – if this will be a requirement for you, then we will try to notify you before your visit so you have time to request one.
